Welcome to First Line Friday’s hosted by Hoarding Books.

Today I am happy to be featuring The Love Note by Joanna Davidson Politano. I’m super excited to be reading this book. I hope you check it out also!

Brighton, England, 1865

It always came to this, didn’t it? Amid the glittering swirl of music and gowns, I looked up into the handsome face of Lord Cumberland and forced a smile as if nothing at all were about to happen.

Now it’s your turn!

The Red Ribbon by Pepper Basham

About the book:

In Carroll County, a corn shucking is the social event of the season, until a mischievous kiss leads to one of the biggest tragedies in Virginia history. Ava Burcham isn’t your typical Blue Ridge Mountain girl. She has a bad habit of courtin’ trouble, and her curiosity has opened a rift in the middle of a feud between politicians and would-be outlaws, the Allen family. Ava’s tenacious desire to find a story worth reporting may land her and her best friend, Jeremiah Sutphin, into more trouble than either of them planned.

The end result? The Hillsville Courthouse Massacre of 1912.

My Thoughts:

There are many stories tucked into the hills and crags of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some stories lost to time, and others woven so deep that generations later the legend lives on. Pepper Basham brings one such story to light and breaths into it her unparalleled style and grace, and of course romance and sweet kisses.

I loved how Pepper Basham brings the setting to life. I felt like I was right there in the story, not only watching it play out in vivid details in my mind, but walking right in the story myself. The characters each bring their own unique charm and life to this story.

The many twists and turns had me holding my breath and rapidly turning pages to see what would happen next. While I did have my suspicions, I enjoyed watching it all unfold. I especially appreciated the levity that Granny Burcham brings to this story.

(I receive complimentary books from publishers, publicists and/or authors, including netgalley. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own.)

A Portrait of Loyalty (The Codebreakers #3) by Roseanna M. White

About this book:

Zivon Marin was one of Russia’s top cryptographers, until the October Revolution tore apart his world. Forced to flee after speaking out against Lenin and separated from his brother along the way, he arrives in England driven by a growing anger and determined to offer his services to the Brits.

Lily Blackwell sees the world best through the lens of a camera–and possesses unsurpassed skill when it comes to retouching and recreating photographs. With her father’s connections in propaganda, she’s recruited to the intelligence division, even though her mother would disapprove.

After Captain Blackwell invites Zivon to dinner one evening, a friendship blooms between him and Lily. He sees patterns in what she deems chaos; she sees beauty in a world he thought destroyed. But both have secrets they’re unwilling to share. When her photographs reveal that someone has been following Zivon, his loyalties are called into question–and his enemies are discovered to be far closer than he’d feared.

My Thoughts:

From the first page until the last this delightful book held my imagination captive. The heart of these characters seized my own and I felt part of their story. Roseanna M. White has expertly crafted a delightful work of art in this story. I loved how we see the world through Lily Blackwell’s eyes as she photographs the world around her. This character came to life in this story and at one pivotal moment, my heart broke right alongside hers.

The twists and turns in the story had me holding my breath and rapidly turning pages to see what would happen next. I said up late reading until my eyes turned blurry more than once because I just didn’t want to put this book down! I highly recommend this story!

(I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.)

First Line Friday: The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus

Welcome to First Line Friday’s hosted by Hoarding Books.

Today I am happy to be featuring The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus by Jaime Jo Wright. I’m just starting to read this newest book from Jaime Jo Wright. I have vague memories of going to a big-top-tent circus once when I was quite young. What I remember most is the huge Elephants. When you are a small child, Elephants leave quite the impression!

Bluff River, Wisconsin
August 1928

Life was not unlike the wisp of fog that curled around the base of a grave marker, softly caressing the marble before dissolving into the violet shadows of the night.

Now it’s your turn!

Black Hills Song (Regional Romance #1) by Kari Trumbo

About this Book:

Three brothers will lose their birthright if they don’t act fast.

Tender Melody
Ezekiel Wagner needs the family ranch to succeed but without money for back taxes, he’ll lose everything. His aunt offers a way out, but is the cost too high? Her dying wish is to give them The Grand Opera House of Rapid City, but there’s one catch. All three brothers must wed first. When he chooses to marry the costume designer out of necessity, will a marriage of convenience ruin the crescendo building between them?

Beloved Duet
Sam Wagner is the forgotten son. He will do whatever he must to take ownership of the Opera House, including send for a mail order bride. When his first plan falls flat, he seeks the hand of the woman who helped him along the way. Except, she’d rather have nothing to do with him or his hand. As time runs short, can he convince her he isn’t the man she believes him to be?

Grand Finale
Caleb Wagner flees his home and his family to escape the pressure of finding a wife. He’s certain if he leaves, his aunt will relent and give his brothers their desires. While away, he meets an opera star in hiding. She convinces him to bring her back to Keystone, the perfect place to escape. Will she be the final piece the family needs or will Caleb’s delay mean silence for them all?

If wives aren’t found before time runs out three brothers will lose their birthright. Don’t miss this sweet, historical romance with perfect pacing and a final curtain you won’t want to miss.

My Thoughts:

What a delightful trio of stories. I enjoyed getting to know these Wagner brothers and read about their unexpected journey to finding the love of their lives. Each story is tied together within their family and common history. Yet each story stands on its own, with its own journey to love, and all the exciting twists and turns that come with it.

Each story is broken up into its own little novella, so it is easy to read an entire story in one setting. However, I found that I didn’t even want to sit the book down between stories. I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen with the next brother! The love stories are a little on the insta-love side, which didn’t bother me in the least. Sometimes the insta-love stories feels too rushed and not realistic. I didn’t find that to be the case with these three.

Beholden (The Fairest Maidens #1) by Jody Hedlund

About the Book:

In a land where being the fairest maiden is a curse . . .

A beautiful noblewoman with a terrible secret, and a prince subjected to slavery.

Upon the death of her wealthy father, Lady Gabriella is condemned to work in Warwick’s gem mine. As she struggles to survive the dangerous conditions, her kindness and beauty shine as brightly as the jewels the slaves excavate. While laboring, Gabriella plots how to avenge her father’s death and stop Queen Margery’s cruelty.

Prince Vilmar of Scania enslaves himself in Warwick’s gem mine as part of a royal test to prove himself the most worthy of three brothers to become the king’s successor. Amidst the hardships, he doesn’t anticipate his growing compassion for the other slaves, especially tenderhearted Gabriella.

As the annual summer ball looms nearer, Gabriella sets into motion her plan to end Queen Margery’s evil. When Vilmar learns of Gabriella’s intentions, he resolves to come to her aid and fight against Warwick’s queen. But doing so may require him to give up his chance of becoming Scania’s next king, perhaps even cost him his life.

My Thoughts:

I loved reading this delightful page-turning story! Adventure, mystery, intrigue, drama, and a sweet romance, this story has something for everyone. I was pulled in right from the first chapter and whisked away into this story. I didn’t want to put my book down for a moment and I certainly was not ready for the story to end! I am eagerly anticipating when the next book releases and I can once again return to Warwick!

Expertly woven into the story are lessons to learn and Biblical truth shared. We are reminded of the importance of giving of ourselves to others, and reminded that Jesus himself gave his life, as payment of our sins so that we might have life eternal with Him in heaven.

If you enjoy fast-paced stories with a fairy-tale twist, then this is a book you must not pass up! Do yourself a favor a snag a copy today, maybe even two, so you can share it with a friend. Because I’m certain that you won’t be able to stop talking about this book once you read it!

Almost A Bride (The Bride Ships #4) by Jody Hedlund

About the book:

Longing to find true love, Kate Millington arrives in British Columbia on a bride ship. With countless men waiting to snag a bride, Kate has no trouble getting engaged. It’s staying engaged that’s the problem. After traveling to the remote mining town of Williamsville to marry her newest fiancé, she finds herself single again.

As the prosperous owner of a gold mine, Zeke Hart has everything he’s ever wanted except for a wife. At Kate’s arrival, he takes it upon himself to protect his childhood friend from the men clamoring to court her. The more he renews her friendship, the more he wants to win her for himself. But as much as Kate admires Zeke, she’s resolved not to marry someone who doesn’t share her faith.

When Zeke begins receiving anonymous threats, he unwittingly puts them both in grave danger. In the midst of peril, the past rises up to haunt them both, and Zeke realizes the fight for Kate’s affection may be his biggest challenge yet.

My Thoughts:

I’m always excited to get my hands on one of Jody Hedlund’s books, because I know that I’m in for adventure, romance, a dash of mystery, and delightful characters that invite me into the story. You don’t simply read a Jody Hedlund book, you experience it! This story, while a little shorter than the earlier books in this series, delivers on all accounts. Each story can stand on it’s own, but trust me when I say that you won’t want to miss out on any of them!

Kate is artistic and free-spirited. A deep wound from her past is holding her back and keeping her from trusting in a lasting relationship. Will she be able to let go of the past in order to take hold of her future and all that life has to offer?

Charming and a bit mischievous, Zeke has a big heart for the community. He wants to gain community support to build a hospital, and see this community that he calls home thrive. Zeke may have made a home for himself in Brittish Columbia, but he is still running from his past. When Kate stumbles back into his life, his past comes rushing back. Will he be able to forgive himself and move forward?

I absolutely loved everything about this story! Fully immersive, with charming characters that have won a place in my heart. This story will stay with me for a long time! Pick-up a copy today and settle in for a delightful journey!

Almost A Bride (Bride Ships #4)

A Bride of Convenience (Bride Ships #3)

The Runaway Bride (Bride Ships #2)

A Reluctant Bride (Bride Ships #1)

Truth About Fame (Faith and Fortune #2) by Toni Shiloh

About the book:

My life has always been in the spotlight. Born to two famous parents and then quickly rising to “super” status in the modeling world ensured that I, Astoria “Tori” Bell, would always have my image plastered across newsstands. Unfortunately, adoring fans weren’t always magnanimous and now I have a stalker on my hands.

Oddly enough, the tall, dark, and all-too handsome bodyguard hired to protect me seems more harmful than the threatening notes from the stalker. As well as his plan to flush out the danger by proposing a fake engagement.

The lines between pretend and reality blur and I have to shore up my resolves. Baggage from my past means I can’t let myself be vulnerable. But the way Marcel Fox treats me has me thinking otherwise.

With a new rock on my finger and the man who put it there by my side, happily ever after seems like a possibility or is that as fake as my public persona?

My Thoughts:

This second book in the Faith and Fortune series has a little something for everyone! Suspense, Romance, Witty Banter, and Faith. I was delighted to spend time with Tori and Fox. More than once I held my breath, turning pages quickly to find out what would happen next. Simply put this story is breath-taking!

We all have struggles and things about ourselves to improve. Tori’s struggle is learning to forgive even when those from the past didn’t ask for forgiveness. As Tori discovers, the peace that is found when we let go of our hurt and bitterness and give it all to God is like shedding a bolder that you’ve been carrying with you for years.

I highly recommend this dynamic, engaging story. Pick up a copy to enjoy, you won’t be sorry!

A Life Once Dreamed by Rachel Fordham

About the book:

Six years ago, a shocking secret sent Agnes Pratt running in search of a new start. She found it in Penance, a rugged town of miners and lumberjacks in the Dakota Territory, where she became Miss Aggie, respected schoolteacher and confirmed old maid. But the past has a way of catching up with people.

When childhood friend and former sweetheart James Harris accepts a position as the town doctor, Aggie’s pleasantly predictable days suddenly become anything but. James wants to know why Agnes left behind the life they had dreamed of creating for themselves–but he is the one person who can never know.

In the shadows of the Black Hills, can a healing light be shed on the past? Or will the secret Agnes can’t seem to outrun destroy her chance at happiness?

Fan-favorite Rachel Fordham brings to life the dusty streets of an 1880s frontier town in this story that affirms where you come from matters far less than where you’re going.

My Thoughts:

From the very first chapter until the last word on the page I was completely invested in the characters of this story. Written with such detail and care, Rachel Fordham invites the reader to join with the characters in the story. My heart went out to Agnes, she sacrifices her own dreams for what she feels is best for those she loves. Several years later when she comes face-to-face with her past, will she make the same choices a second time?

Amid uncertainty and calamity Agnes clings to the truth that God loves her and has a plan for her life. A beautiful reminder to us all that even when things look bad, God can make a blessing out of it. God’s love for us can right any wrong!

(I receive complimentary books from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including Netgalley. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own.)

About the Author:

Rachel Fordham has long been fascinated by all things historical or in the words of her children “old stuff”. Often the historical trivia she discovers is woven into her children’s bedtime tales. Despite her love for good stories she didn’t attempt writing a novel until her husband challenged her to do so (and now she’s so glad he did). Since that time she’s often been found typing or researching while her youngest child naps or frantically writing plot twists while she waits in the school pick-up line. In addition to her passion for storytelling she enjoys reading, being outdoors and seeing new places. Rachel lives with her husband and children on an island in Washington state.
