Rakes and Roses (Mayfield Family #3) by Josi S. Kilpack

About the book:

Lady Sabrina endured an abusive marriage, a miscarriage, and early widowhood to emerge as a smart, successful, confident woman who found a way to make her mark in a man’s world. She has friends and purpose, but cannot hide from the emptiness she feels when the parties are over and the friends have gone home to families she will never have.

Harry Stillman may be charming and handsome, but he’s a gambler and a rake who has made a mockery of his privileges. He turns to the mysterious Lord Damion for financial relief from his debts, but still ends up beaten nearly senseless by thugs and left in an ally.

When Lady Sabrina comes upon Harry after the attack, she remembers the kindness Harry once showed to her six years ago and brings him to her estate to heal. Though their relationship begins on rocky footing, it soon mellows into friendship, then trust. But Lady Sabrina needs to keep Harry at a distance, even if he is becoming the kind of man worthy of her heart. After all, she is keeping a secret that, if exposed, could destroy everything she’s so carefully built.

My Thoughts:

This story is unique and filled with dynamic characters that are sure to not only charm you but have you in their corner cheering them on. A story that flips convention on its head by the heroine coming to the rescue of the hero.

Lady Sabrina has known her fair share of the hard knocks of life, yet she continues to rise above her circumstances and make something out of her life. She has learned the hard way that she can not depend on a man to provide for her. Lady Sabrina has a big heart and wants to make a difference in the world around her, and as unlikely and uncommon as it may be, she found a way to do just that.

I have to admit that I was irritated with Harry on more than one occasion. He has a hard head, he is not one that learns his lesson the first time or often third time for that matter. Of course if a character gets under your skin enough to upset you, then you know the author has done a great job in making that character real!

There were a few chapters in my humble opinion seemed to be bogged down with information dumping. A few things that could have been cut out that would have tightened the story and the reader not miss anything. Keeping in mind that the copy I read was the ARC (advanced reader copy) and those things could be changed in the finial version. With that said, as a whole I did enjoy the story!

The Lost Lieutenant (Serendipity & Secrets #1) by Erica Vetsch

About this book:

He’s doing what he can to save the Prince Regent’s life . . . but can he save his new marriage as well? Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero–he just wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn’t think that saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry.

Now Evan has a new title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon him by a grateful ruler. What he doesn’t have are all his memories. Traumatized as a result of his wounds and bravery on the battlefield, Evan knows there’s something he can’t quite remember. It’s important, dangerous–and if he doesn’t recall it in time, will jeopardize not only his marriage but someone’s very life.

Readers who enjoy Julie Klassen, Carolyn Miller, and Kristi Ann Hunter will love diving into this brand-new Regency series filled with suspense, aristocratic struggles, and a firm foundation of faith.

My Thoughts:

This is the first book I’ve ready from Erica Vetsch, and I can honestly say that I’m eagerly anticipating reading more from her in the future! If ever there was a binge worthy book, this is it! Right from the very first chapter I was swept off my feet and into this exciting story.

Evan Eldridge is such a swoony hero! Beyond his own struggles, he valiantly fights to protect others. Yes, he makes mistakes, but he owns up to them. And while his past and where he comes from defines him in the eyes of others, he finds a way to rise above that and blaze his own path.

This isn’t just another marriage of connivence story set in the Regency period. This story stands head and shoulders above the others. Witty dialogue, exciting adventure, spies, a secret-agent, tender romance, and page-turning drama are sure to warm you heart and keep you reading long past your bedtime.  Snag your copy to today and settle in for a story that you won’t want to put down!

  Her Hidden Hope

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed escaping into this story each evening! These characters quickly warmed my heart and I enjoyed getting to know them. I felt like I experienced the events right along side Addie and Evan. From the sweet rediscovery of a tender love story that began when Addie and Evan were teenagers and now as adults with more history and a perspective the love that grows is even deeper and more meaningful.

There are moments that gripped my heart and had me reaching for the tissues. But there were even more moments that had me smiling in contentment and laughing out loud at the fun antics of Sawyer & Belay.

When I started the book, I didn’t realize that this is the fourth book in the series. However, even without first reading the other books, I didn’t once feel lost. I do however want to go back and read the other stories from characters that I met in this story! I recommend this story and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

  Her Hidden Hope

Welcome, Jill! I am so glad you could join us today for a visit. Let’s start out with a few get-to-know-you questions and then talk about your new book.

Q:  What is your favorite season, and why?

Jill:  I love summer for numerous reasons. My birthday is in the summer, and I’m big on birthdays. 🙂 I also love the warmth and sunshine. We get a lot of snow in Colorado, but the trade off is our gorgeous summer nights. My family loves to sit by the fire outside and enjoy the weather and stars. I can’t wait for some warmer weather!

Q:  What is the best part of your day?

Jill:  I like the part of the evening when dinner is over and cleaned up, and it’s time to relax. I love a good soak in the tub or to just chill with my family and watch a movie.

Q:  What are some of your favorite CF reads from 10 years ago, or further?

Jill:  I enjoy Denise Hunter’s books, and I’ve been reading her for a looong time. I also love Redeeming Love. Just like with my writing, I do love a good romance. Kristen Heitzmann has a series called Diamond of the Rockies that I’ve read numerous times. It’s beautifully written.

Q:  If we took a peek at your “recently played” music, who would we find?

Jill:  I listen to waves or white noise while I write, so that’s what is usually on at home. In the car, I like Jackson Five or I’ll listen to whatever my kids like. I confess, I like teenager music. 🙂

Q:  What do you love about this story?

Jill:  It was so much fun to write Sawyer’s part of the story. He’s two and kind of a rascal. So basically a normal two year old boy. 🙂 I also enjoyed writing the connection between Sawyer and Belay (the dog on the front cover.)

Q:  Which character took you by surprise

Jill:  Evan took me by surprise, because I didn’t expect him to have as many issues with the past as he did. But he’s a sensitive guy even though his profession makes him tough on the outside.

Q:  What is something you hope readers will tell others about this story?

Jill:  I hope readers will tell someone that they laughed and maybe even cried. I love to experience emotion while I’m reading, and I hope they find the same.

Q:  What is something that didn’t make it into the final copy?

Jill:  Boy – it’s been so long since I wrote this story that I can’t remember what got cut. But, I did have to do a lot of re-writing and editing on this one, so I know plenty hit the cutting room floor. 🙂

Q:  What new story are you currently working on?

Jill:  I am working on the 6th and final book in the Colorado Grooms series. It’s yet to be titled. The next book out after Her Hidden Hope will be Raising Honor. That one is finished – Yay! Just one more to go! Thank you for having me!

Thank you, Jill for visiting with us today and chatting about your new book!
