Besotted (The Fairest Maidens #3) by Jody Hedlund

About the Book:

In a land where being the fairest maiden is a curse . . .

A young queen trying to stay alive until she comes of age to rule, and a prince turned into a pauper.

Queen Aurora of Mercia has spent her entire life deep in Inglewood Forest, hiding from Warwick’s Queen Margery, who seeks her demise. As the time draws near for Aurora to take the throne, she happens upon a handsome woodcutter. Although friendship with outsiders is forbidden and dangerous, she cannot stay away from the charming stranger.

Only two months away from completing his royal testing, Prince Kresten of Scania is ready to be finished with the poverty and hardships of being a woodcutter. When he meets a beautiful peasant woman, he doesn’t plan to fall in love, especially when he must soon leave and return to his homeland.

As Queen Margery’s forces close in, Aurora finds herself in mortal danger. Kresten knows a future with Aurora is impossible, but he is desperate to save her and bring an end to the queen’s threat. To do so, he joins the ultimate battle against the evil queen, risking everything, including his chance at true love.

The real Sleeping Beauty story.

My Thoughts:

A most satisfying conclusion to The Fairest Maidens collection. A page-turning adventure awaits within the pages of this delightful twist on the old classic of Sleeping Beauty. Unexpected and exciting. While this collection is listed as Young Adult, readers of all ages will be blissfully enchanted by this wonderful collection.

I always enjoy escaping into Jody Hedlund’s stories, and this latest story was the perfect escape! The plot is exciting and the characters are dynamic and show growth throughout the story. Even though I didn’t want the story to come to an end, everything was resolved, and I felt quite satisfied with the conclusion.

I enjoyed the banter between the characters and watching their relationship grow and mature, both with each other and with other characters as well. As always, a Hedlund story is not to be missed. I highly recommend this book and the entire collection to anyone who is looking for a book to lose themselves in.

Beguiled (The Fairest Maidens #2) by Jody Hedlund

About the Book:

In a land where being the fairest maiden is a curse . . .

A princess rejected and hunted by her mother, and a prince who lives as a shunned outcast.

Princess Pearl flees for her life after her mother, Queen Margery, tries to have her killed during a hunting expedition. Pearl finds refuge on the Isle of Outcasts among criminals and misfits, disguising her face with a veil so no one recognizes her. She lives for the day when she can return to Warwick and rescue her sister, Ruby, from the queen’s clutches.

Amidst his royal testing on the Isle of Outcasts, Prince Mikkel of Scania has kept his identity a secret. Captured by a warring band of outcasts and condemned to die, he finds himself making friends with an intriguing but feisty young veiled woman. Intending to win her trust and gain her help to escape, he soon finds himself coerced to wed her.

Mikkel reluctantly agrees to the union to save his life, and Pearl hopes the marriage will provide protection for her and Ruby. But the queen is more determined to kill her daughter than either Pearl or Mikkel realizes and has a sinister reason neither expects—one that could rip their new love apart forever.

My Thoughts:

Such an exciting, page-turning adventure. I fairly inhaled this book. I didn’t mean to, but I read this book in a day. I couldn’t put it down! With vivid engaging characters and a story line that pulls you in and won’t let go, you won’t want to pass up the opportunity to dive into this story!

Lessons of letting go of bitterness, looking at the character of people and not the outside, and that love isn’t just a feeling, but a choice. The characters grow and learn from each other throughout the story. I enjoyed the adventure, the drama, and the suspense it all blends together seamlessly.

Jody Hedlund’s books are always an instant buy for me. I don’t just read the story once and move on, I often come back and enjoy the story again! This newest series is a pure delight and I simply can not wait until the next story comes out!

Beholden (The Fairest Maidens #1) by Jody Hedlund

About the Book:

In a land where being the fairest maiden is a curse . . .

A beautiful noblewoman with a terrible secret, and a prince subjected to slavery.

Upon the death of her wealthy father, Lady Gabriella is condemned to work in Warwick’s gem mine. As she struggles to survive the dangerous conditions, her kindness and beauty shine as brightly as the jewels the slaves excavate. While laboring, Gabriella plots how to avenge her father’s death and stop Queen Margery’s cruelty.

Prince Vilmar of Scania enslaves himself in Warwick’s gem mine as part of a royal test to prove himself the most worthy of three brothers to become the king’s successor. Amidst the hardships, he doesn’t anticipate his growing compassion for the other slaves, especially tenderhearted Gabriella.

As the annual summer ball looms nearer, Gabriella sets into motion her plan to end Queen Margery’s evil. When Vilmar learns of Gabriella’s intentions, he resolves to come to her aid and fight against Warwick’s queen. But doing so may require him to give up his chance of becoming Scania’s next king, perhaps even cost him his life.

My Thoughts:

I loved reading this delightful page-turning story! Adventure, mystery, intrigue, drama, and a sweet romance, this story has something for everyone. I was pulled in right from the first chapter and whisked away into this story. I didn’t want to put my book down for a moment and I certainly was not ready for the story to end! I am eagerly anticipating when the next book releases and I can once again return to Warwick!

Expertly woven into the story are lessons to learn and Biblical truth shared. We are reminded of the importance of giving of ourselves to others, and reminded that Jesus himself gave his life, as payment of our sins so that we might have life eternal with Him in heaven.

If you enjoy fast-paced stories with a fairy-tale twist, then this is a book you must not pass up! Do yourself a favor a snag a copy today, maybe even two, so you can share it with a friend. Because I’m certain that you won’t be able to stop talking about this book once you read it!

Almost A Bride (The Bride Ships #4) by Jody Hedlund

About the book:

Longing to find true love, Kate Millington arrives in British Columbia on a bride ship. With countless men waiting to snag a bride, Kate has no trouble getting engaged. It’s staying engaged that’s the problem. After traveling to the remote mining town of Williamsville to marry her newest fiancé, she finds herself single again.

As the prosperous owner of a gold mine, Zeke Hart has everything he’s ever wanted except for a wife. At Kate’s arrival, he takes it upon himself to protect his childhood friend from the men clamoring to court her. The more he renews her friendship, the more he wants to win her for himself. But as much as Kate admires Zeke, she’s resolved not to marry someone who doesn’t share her faith.

When Zeke begins receiving anonymous threats, he unwittingly puts them both in grave danger. In the midst of peril, the past rises up to haunt them both, and Zeke realizes the fight for Kate’s affection may be his biggest challenge yet.

My Thoughts:

I’m always excited to get my hands on one of Jody Hedlund’s books, because I know that I’m in for adventure, romance, a dash of mystery, and delightful characters that invite me into the story. You don’t simply read a Jody Hedlund book, you experience it! This story, while a little shorter than the earlier books in this series, delivers on all accounts. Each story can stand on it’s own, but trust me when I say that you won’t want to miss out on any of them!

Kate is artistic and free-spirited. A deep wound from her past is holding her back and keeping her from trusting in a lasting relationship. Will she be able to let go of the past in order to take hold of her future and all that life has to offer?

Charming and a bit mischievous, Zeke has a big heart for the community. He wants to gain community support to build a hospital, and see this community that he calls home thrive. Zeke may have made a home for himself in Brittish Columbia, but he is still running from his past. When Kate stumbles back into his life, his past comes rushing back. Will he be able to forgive himself and move forward?

I absolutely loved everything about this story! Fully immersive, with charming characters that have won a place in my heart. This story will stay with me for a long time! Pick-up a copy today and settle in for a delightful journey!

A Bride of Convenience (The Bride Ships #3) by Jody Hedlund

About this book:

Unemployed mill worker Zoe Hart jumps at the opportunity to emigrate to British Columbia in 1863 to find a better life and be reunited with her brother, who fled from home after being accused of a crime.

Pastor to miners in the mountains, Abe Merivale discovers an abandoned baby during a routine visit to Victoria and joins efforts with Zoe, one of the newly arrived bride-ship women, to care for the infant. While there, he’s devastated by the news from his fiancee in England that she’s marrying another man.

With mounting pressure to find the baby a home, Zoe accepts a proposal from a miner of questionable character after he promises to help her locate her brother. Intent on protecting Zoe and frustrated by his failed engagement, Abe offers his own hand as groom. After a hasty wedding, they soon realize their marriage of convenience is not so convenient after all.

My Thoughts:

I have enjoyed reading the Bride Ship series. Each story stands alone yet eloquently captures the very heart of not only the time period but also the characters. I find myself saying, “this is my favorite one”, And then I read the next story, and its even better! The flawless descriptions of the setting bring me right into the story with the characters. I could almost smell the abundant evergreens and feel the mud sucking at my feet as we traveled through the town burdened down with our purchases from the small, cluttered general store. Even the background characters felt real and important.

I loved Zoe’s heart for others, especially children. Even though she has known her share of heartache, and tries to hold her heart away from others, she just can’t help but be lead by her heart. I also, wanted to scoop up baby Violet and cuddle her and sing her songs, and give her bubble kisses on her sweet cheeks. It is easy to see how Zoe instantly fell in love with this sweet baby!

Abe may have bumbled his way into his marriage with Zoe, but once he made the commitment he didn’t stray from it. I just wish he had learned a little sooner how to express his affection and commitment. Of course it was his personality type and his history that held him back. But once he figures it out, nothing holds him back!

I absolutely loved this marriage of convince story and I know these dynamic characters will stay with me for quite a while. This story has easily earned a place on my favorite keeper shelf and I smile ever time I glimpse the book there, knowing what delights await within its pages! I highly recommend this wonderful story!

The Runaway Bride (The Bride Ships #2) by Jody Hedlund

Synopsis:

Wealthy Arabella Lawrence flees to British Columbia on a bride ship still wearing the scars of past mistakes. One of the few single women in the boomtown, she immediately has suitors, but she is determined not to find herself trapped again by a poor choice.

Vying for her hand are two very different men. Lieutenant Richard Drummond is a gentleman in the Navy and is held in high esteem. Peter Kelly is the town’s baker and has worked hard to build a thriving business. He and Drummond not only compete for Arabella’s affections, but clash over their views of how the natives should be treated in the midst of a smallpox outbreak.

As Arabella begins to overcome her fears, she discovers someone in dire need—a starving girl abandoned by her tribe. Intent on helping the girl, Arabella leans on Peter’s advice and guidance. Will she have the wisdom to make the right decision or will seeking what’s right cost both her and Peter everything?

The Runaway Bride (The Bride Ships #2)

My Thoughts:

Ladies, grab your fans! The smoldering looks, and the near kisses are sure to keep you holding your breath as butterflies dance in your stomach, you may just find yourself reaching for your fan along with Arabella! I loved this story and these characters. Especially our hero Peter. He is my new favorite literary hero!

Arabella’s back story had me both sad and angry. Sad, for the hurt she must have felt at the seeming disregard her father had for her safety and angry at the man who hurt her. Of course, I realize that her story is something that happened all too often during that time. The blatant lack of regard that society, in general, had toward women is jarring to our modern sensibilities. Yes, even today, in many parts of the world women are still treated as if they can not make their own decisions and lead their own lives. While, not perfect, the status women hold today in American society has vastly improved. It is easy to take for granted the blessings we have!

Along with the romance and historical details, this story tackles some tough issues. Arabella deals with physical abuse and through the eyes of our main characters, we come face-to-face with the awful injustice and racial prejudice that the natives of British Columbia endured when overtaken by the English Colonists. Our hero’s soft heart and willingness to make a difference in the lives of the native people is one more reason to love him.

I love this story, and I’m looking forward to reading the next two books in this series. This is a book you will want for your keeper shelf. To be able to pull it out and enjoy it again anytime you wish!
