A Wreath of Snow (A Victorian Christmas Novella) by Liz Curtis Higgs

Synopsis:

All Margaret Campbell wants for Christmas is a safe journey home. When her plans for a festive holiday with her family in Stirling crumble beneath the weight of her brother’s bitterness, the young schoolteacher wants nothing more than to return to the students she loves and the town house she calls home.

Then an unexpected detour places her in the path of Gordon Shaw, a handsome newspaperman from Glasgow, who struggles under a burden of remorse and shame.

When the secret of their shared history is revealed, will it leave them tangled in a knot of regret? Or might their past hold the threads that will bind their future together?

As warm as a woolen scarf on a cold winter’s eve, A Wreath of Snow is a tender story of love and forgiveness, wrapped in a celebration of all things Scottish, all things Victorian, and, especially, all things Christmas.

My Thoughts:

My first experience reading A Wreath of Snow came in 2011 when the book was first published. My sweet husband, purchased me a hard copy of the book for Christmas, knowing that Liz is one of my favorite authors. I may have given him hints (okay, left sticky notes in locations where he couldn’t miss them). Since that year, I’ve enjoyed reading A Wreath of Snow several times.

This story takes place in Scotland (yet another reason to love it!), and as with all stories written by Liz, I feel as if by simply opening the pages and beginning to read that I’ve taken a time machine, back in time and across the ocean.

If I had to narrow the theme of the book down to one word, I would choose Forgiveness. As you read the story, you will see that choosing to carry the burden of past wrongs, only weighs you down. Once you can let go, and forgive, then you can thrive!

I give this story 5 stars and encourage you to find a copy to enjoy and share with a friend. May the season of Christmas live in your heart all year long.

My Review:

For starters can I just gush over how gorgeous this book cover is? I love the colors, the roses and the pretty vase. But let me tell you that what is inside the book is even more beautiful and perfect.

This book is a fantastic book for both personal devotions or small group study. I have really enjoyed delving deeper into the verses, and the personal invitation to write the verses on my own heart. I found many favorite verses included. It was pure joy reading Liz’s thoughts and studying with her the various passages.

At the end of each chapter you will find an invitation to look up the verses in different versions of the Bible and a blank space to write the verse yourself right in the book with your favorite version of the text. I really appreciated this being included and enjoyed reading different versions and discovering which one spoke to my heart!

This book fits perfectly in my worship bag. I’m sure you will love this book as much as I have. Bottom line, I love this book!

(I own a copy of this delightful book. I was not asked to review this book. The opinions expressed are my own.)

Favorite Quote(s):

“From God’s point of view, love & faithfulness are inseparable”

About the Author:

Liz-beside-red-door-CROP-300-224x300At heart “I have three abiding passions: encouraging my sisters in Christ, exploring the stories of women in the Bible, and writing novels set in Scotland of old. When I’m not traveling, speaking, or spinning a story, I connect with readers online, take copious photos, read historical novels, watch period films, and immerse myself in research—the more books, the merrier.

I’m a lame housekeeper, a marginal cook, and a mediocre gardener, but home is still my favorite place to land.” –
