When You Look at Me (Pleasant Gap Romance #2) by Pepper Basham

Synopsis:

When Julia Jenkins’ great aunt dies and leaves her a Victorian mansion with decades of secrets, Julia never expects to unearth a World War 2 espionage mystery. Struggling with her own past since an assault left her pregnant, her future as a solo parent leaves her dreams uncertain. The inheritance from her great aunt gives Julia the ability to take a step back into her future, but also sends her into the discovery of a love story she’d never anticipated. As she goes through her aunt’s treasured possessions, Julia uncovers some oddly written piano music with a musical code she can’t decipher on her own. Not to worry, introverted Englishman and composer, Henry Wright, is thrust on the scene by a pair of homespun matchmakers who know the ‘right’ man for Julia’s wounded heart.

Henry arrives in Pleasant Gap with the task of composing the soundtrack for his best mate’s newest film. The Jenkins’ family’s southern welcome and gregarious personalities set his reticent nature on edge, but he’s inexplicably drawn to his gentle and music-loving hostess, Julia. Uncertain how to build a friendship with the wounded woman, and rather hopeless in communicating well through words, the bond of music becomes a bridge between her uncertainty and his awkwardness.

But her broken past and his families’ expectations build a wall much greater than the cultures that separate them. As they work together to solve a musical mystery from the grave, will an unlikely romance from the past inspire their hearts to trust in a God who’s written the perfect melody for their lives?

My Thoughts:

You absolutely must get yourself a copy of this captivating story! So much emotion and engaging dialogue! Moments of sheer bliss and laughter. Moments of deep and poignant conversations, and of course the swoon-worthy kisses! I easily fell in love with these characters. I didn’t simply read this story, I experienced it.

Pepper Basham words paint beautiful, panoramic vistas. I felt like I could not only see the Blue Ridge Mountains but hear the sounds and smell the fresh air. I was able to travel back home to where I grew up, right in the pages of this story.

I enjoyed the mystery and uncovering the secrets from WWII that were discovered as Henry and Julia, our amateur sleuths pack up Aunt Millie’s house. What a treasure trove and an exciting discovery!

With lyrical elegance, this tender story of love is sure to weave its romantic melody around your heart and replay through your mind like an enchanting memory. Without a doubt, this story has earned every star imaginable and deserves a spot on your keeper shelf!

Jane by the Book by Pepper Basham

Synopsis:

Four years ago, Jane Warwick escaped the shame and heartbreak of being jilted at the altar by becoming a housekeeper at the secluded Inn at Simeon Ridge. Predictable and quiet, the inn helps Jane find a place to heal and celebrates her strengths, where she is promoted to head housekeeper. But an unexpected visit to Bath, England, upsets Jane’s plans and sends her out of her comfort zone, directly into the harrowing path of historical detective author, Titus Stewart. The only plans Titus sticks to are family holidays and the ones that send him careening into his story worlds, but when an uptight and nervous innkeeper stumbles into his life – and his latest novel – nonfiction begins to take on a much more interesting gleam.

As the unlikely pair delve into the mystery behind a one-hundred-and-fifty-year-old letter, will they both uncover a romance that stands the test of time?

My Thoughts:

From the first sentence until the last word on the page, I was blissfully along for a literary journey with Jane and Titus. Our story begins in the lush Blue Ridge Mountains and then we travel to Bath England, where I was swept off my feet by the quirky Titus Stewart.

Ladies, Titus is sure to steal your heart! He is a prince charming in black-framed glasses, who occasionally get’s lost in his own creative genius story writing. Titus is quirky and a more than a little unsure of himself. But this just adds to his appeal. He has a heart of gold and is willing to go the extra mile to help a friend.

This fun novella is full of sleuthing mystery and Pepper’s signature light-hearted romance. You are sure to fall in love with Jane & Titus in this delightful story!

Timeless Love: Romantic Stories that Span the Ages

Synopsis:

Give Me Thine Heart 1812 Andrea Boeshaar
Moira loathes the man she is set to marry. But when she meets Samuel Stryker, she soon guesses that he’s from the colonies. When she finds a deep secret, Sam must make the decision: kill her or take her with him.

This Freedom Journey 1833 Misty M. Beller
Adrien Lockman left France to finally live life on his own terms, but when he discovers a half-starved and half-frozen woman in the treacherous Canadian mountains, the truth soon becomes clear–the only way they’ll survive is together.

The Heart of Home 1865 Stephenia H. McGee
Opal Martin aspires to scrub the remnants of the War Between the States from her tattered life. When a nearly drowned soldier appears and asks if he can die on her porch, she must guard against the sudden revival of her heart’s hope for love. Tristan Stuart wants to escape the pain of war. He wakes up at a house that’s too much like home, with a woman determined to mend him he may discover a life worth fighting for. To save the last of what Opal holds dear, will he become the man she needs or let the troubled waters carry him away?

Enchanting Nicholette 1893 Dawn Crandall
Young, widowed, and newly out of mourning, Nicholette Everstone is an heiress yearning to be loved. Her parents had arranged for her to marry her loving late husband, but the marriage ended tragically on her wedding day. Returning to Boston after being away, she finds there’s someone new to her set of friends and family she can’t help but fall for. But when she learns of the danger and sacrifices this man takes on, will her heart be strong enough to keep her fears at bay?

Teach Me To Love 1899 Kari Trumbo
Izzy Lawson has taken her last abuse. When her husband dies, she rushes to Belle Fourche to stay with the only friend she has. The wall she’s worked so hard to build crumbles in the arms of a man so different from her husband. Conrad Oleson can’t read and it’s shamed him for longer than he can remember. As Izzy reveals her painful past, he can’t stay away. He’ll do about anything, to get closer. Including, teach her how to love.

Façade 1942 Pepper D. Basham
Olivia Rakes has excellent observations skills for facts and details, but stumbles through matters of the heart. When her brother goes missing in German-occupied France, Livy enlists her services with a group of search-and-rescue spies, who not only thrust her toward espionage, but…romance. Agent Christopher Dawson has avoided Livy since she broke his heart. When the search for his best friend brings them together, the heart takes on a mind of its own. In a world where war changes the rules of life and love, can they work together to complete their rescue mission before the enemy catches them?

Bookishly Ever After 2018 Sarah Monzon
It all started with a bet and a book.
Emory Blake is the ultimate bibliophile. She’d take curling up with a novel over a night on the town any day. But then her best friend, Tate Woodby, accuses her of living between the pages of her paperbacks instead of the real world, and he makes a bet that will force her to experience the adventures of her fictional friends…instead of just reading about them. With her face no longer buried in books, Emory must confront the pain of the past.

My Thoughts:

Travel through time beginning in 1812 to 2018, all from the comfort of your favorite reading chair! Come along for an adventure that you won’t soon forget! Each story is unique, yet they all share the common thread of love and strong heroines who boldly face the dangers of the unknown.

I loved every story in this collection! Two of the authors were brand new to me, and I have already been searching for more books to read from them! It isn’t often that you come across a collection like this where every story sparks your imagination and keeps you turning pages wanting more.

Something for everyone can be found in the pages of these stories! Love, Laughter, History, Romance, Mystery, Adventure, and most of all each story shines a light on God and the importance of His love.

I give this delightful collection of stories an enthusiastic 5-stars and would encourage you to snap up your copy today!

Excerpt:

A sweet internal tremor accompanied each time he said her name. She frowned at its unwelcome violation to her cool-headedness, but her heart welcomed the sensation. She’d missed him. There was something incredibly attractive about a man who engaged in such excellent arguments. Yes, she missed this, their tête-a-têtes. She almost smiled. There were too few men up to the task of a good verbal sparring.

“The Government Code and Cypher School sought you to join their elite team of code breakers at Bletchley, but you refused.”

“Regretfully declined would be a better way to word it. Besides, I am not well-suited to the mathematical component of that task. Languages? Linguistics? Observation? Yes. But numbers, no.”

“And you also refused a request from the Special Operations Executive.”

“I have no interest in using my womanly wiles to ascertain how prepared male spies are for the temptations of the field. As I’m certain you know, with your extended knowledge of me.” She waved a hand toward herself. “I’ve already been branded a spinster by my mother, which is in part due to my charming personality.” She swallowed a laugh at his glare of utter doubt. “The other part I blame wholly on the weak constitution of most men to appreciate a confident woman and their evident inability to engage in fidelity. When the cat’s away…you understand.”

“You have a very low opinion of most men.”

“The way of the world would prove me right, don’t you think? Let us not forget, my darling fiancé lasted only one month before his heart was swayed by another.”

Christopher’s expression took a turn she couldn’t decipher, but it somehow beckoned her nearer. “And he broke you heart?”

She laughed. “Goodness, no. The only man in my life who broke my heart was you.”

A shot of air escaped his open mouth. “Me?”

Her gaze lifted to his, a river of uncertainty stealing the fire of her accusations. Could he truly be surprised by her declaration? “How…how could you just leave? After all our years together? Nothing but a card at Christmas and birthdays? Wasn’t our friendship worth more than that? Clearly I underestimated the mutual attachment.”

He stared at her, tension fading from his face by slow degrees. Something akin to regret dawned in those cerulean eyes. “I…I shouldn’t have left that way. It was irresponsible and unkind.”

“Indeed.” She took a step back from him. “A little late for clarity, isn’t it, Christopher. Three years late.”

“You really had no idea.” He groaned and ran a hand through his hair. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“Yet you think me clever enough to engage in espionage?”

“It’s different, Livy. Worlds different. But I was wrong. I reacted blindly from my anger and disappoint–”

Your disappointment?” She closed in, the sting of pain pushing past her logic. “We’d been friends…” She shrugged, recalling their consistent arguments and intense discussions over books they’d read and philosophies they didn’t share. “Or at least friendly antagonists who’d developed a relationship over habitual time and conversations. You were a…a fixture.”

An unfriendly laugh accompanied a shake of his head. “A fixture? Yes, that would be a very clear definition. How engaging you make friendship sound, my dear Livy.”

“So, you would call it friendship then, would you?” She shot him a glare. “Well, your employment of friendship leaves as much to be desired as my definition.”

Character Spotlight & Giveaway with Pepper Basham

Anyone who has read the two books in The Mitchell’s Crossroads series by Pepper Basham – Twist of Faith & Charming the Troublemaker is familiar with Ma Mitchell. For those who may not be familiar yet with this delightful series, you can read my reviews for both books by clicking on the titles above.

I’ve invited Pepper Basham to visit today and share with us about Ma Mitchell and the inspiration behind her character. If we are lucky, we may even get a homespun family recipe!

pepperbarnsmile

Charming the Troublemaker (Mitchell’s Crossroads #2)

A Twist of Faith (Mitchell’s Crossroads #1)

Without further delay, I’m going to turn things over to Pepper and let her share with you in her own words with us about Ma Mitchell. Please give Pepper a warm welcome!

Some characters come purely from imagination and some are born from real life.

Ma Mitchell in the Mitchell’s Crossroads series has a whole lot of real-life inspiration with some imagination sprinkled in.

The matriarch of the Mitchell clan, she’s an ever-present sounding board, wisdom giver, gentle voice, or firm director. She kind of reminds me of a mother hen gathering up her chicks, whether they were biologically hers or not.

Ma Mitchell creates an environment of welcome.

Of belonging.

And, boy oh boy, can she cook!

SpencerfamilyWhen I started daydreaming about the Mitchell’s Crossroads series, I drew from my background of being in a large and wonderful Appalachian family, headed by a beautiful matriarch. My Granny Spencer.

A young widow with six kids to raise, her strength, wisdom, and welcome became the root for her own family as well as many other people who were looking for a good meal, friendly company, a compassionate heart, and a listening ear.

meandgranny1forweb (1)My memories are too many to mention, but some of my favorites are having Sunday lunch at Granny’s house where above 25 people at a time would gather and fellowship. I was also one of Granny’s “yard hoppin’” buddies (went to yard sales with her). Another thing that was particularly special to me was listening to family history stories. She could recount back 5 generations or more. Amazing stuff – and more inspiration 😊

So as Ma Mitchell swelled from my imagination into reality, she began to look a whole lot like my Granny in personality, not so much in physical appearance. (I had to leave some imagination in there)

A couple of things readers have enjoyed about Ma Mitchell are:

  1. Her wisdom- she’s always giving advice in unique ways. Sometimes directly and sometimes through story/example. That’s definitely an Appalachian thing 😉 We love storytelling (true ones and not so true)
  2. Her kindness – she has a sweet way of drawing the lonesome ones into the family. From Dee to Alex (and more to come), Ma Mitchell opens her home and heart to help people find a place to belong. Her faith definitely shines out in both her wisdom and kindness.
  3. Her cooking – Yep, she’s feeding a ‘gang’, as she calls them. Any time you enter Ma Mitchell’s house, you’re going to smell something cooking, whether it’s Breakfast Bake, Pot Roast, or Apple cobbler.

In celebration of the release of Charming the Troublemaker and in memory of my Granny, I’m gonna share a few homespun recipes straight from Ma Mitchell’s table.

This recipe is from a 1920 family journal.

Jam Cake

½ cup sugar
2/3 cup butter
½ cup jam (of your choice)
½ cup sour cream
3 eggs
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ tsp cloves
½ tsp nutmeg

Mix all ingredients well and bake in layers put together with caramel icing/filling

Caramel Filling
     3 cups brown sugar
½ cup sweet milk or cream
Butter the size of a small egg
Boil and stir until thick and flavor with vanilla

Homemade Doughnuts

1 c sour cream
1 c sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 eggs
A little salt, ginger and cinnamon and flour enough to make dough to roll.

Fry in hot fat (or oil in our case 😊)

Thank you, Pepper for stopping by and sharing with us about Ma Mitchell and about your own Granny Spencer. It is always a special treat to have you drop by for a visit!
I loved the photo’s you shared. They brought back happy memories I have of my own Grandma.
