First Line Friday: The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus

Welcome to First Line Friday’s hosted by Hoarding Books.

Today I am happy to be featuring The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus by Jaime Jo Wright. I’m just starting to read this newest book from Jaime Jo Wright. I have vague memories of going to a big-top-tent circus once when I was quite young. What I remember most is the huge Elephants. When you are a small child, Elephants leave quite the impression!

Spotlight: No Greater Love (Shadows Over Whitman #1) by Gina Holder

Welcome Friends! Today is the release day of No Greater Love by Gina Holder. To celebrate, join me for a quick look at Gina’s new story.

About the Book:

One Book Changed Her Life…and Her Eternity

Paige McDonald, an antique book collector and the adopted granddaughter of a firefighter, vows never to fall in love with a first responder. But an inscription in an old Bible disrupts everything she knows about herself, her family, and God, and sends her directly into the radar of Patrol Officer Hamilton Bryant.

After the death of his best friend and fellow officer, Hamilton vows never to marry—at all. He won’t risk leaving a widow. Instead, he reserves his passion for serving his family and the town he’s sworn to protect. When a series of robberies and threats against the mayor correspond with Paige’s sudden appearance in Whitman, their paths intersect.

He said he’d never risk leaving a widow.
She said she’d never love a man in uniform.
God had different plans.

Excerpt:

A bell jingled as Paige entered the Rustic Cup Café. Two elderly men played a card game of some kind at a corner booth, but the rest of the place was deserted. Paintings, all for sale, lined the brick interior walls. She squinted and leaned in to catch the name of the artist. Someone named Lawrence Faye signed the bottom left corner of each painting. A young woman, wearing a hot pink hoodie and ear buds in her ears, balanced on a stool behind the counter and stared at the cell phone in her hands. A half-erased chalkboard advertised the café’s various coffee drinks. By the remaining letters, Paige made out mocha, latte, cappuccino, decaf, and the word pastry, but it looked more like paste. Hopefully, the pastries didn’t taste like paste. “Hello.” Paige waved her hands. “I’d like to order.”

The girl’s head popped up. “Oh.” She jerked the ear buds from her ears. “What can I get you?” She asked as she hopped from the stool. “We have fresh coffee, hot muffins, and delicious breakfast sandwiches. I know they’re delicious ‘cause I already tried one. Miss Jenn makes them fresh every morning. She has to get up at like four o’clock in the morning to make them.”

“Wow, OK. May I have a caramel chocolate chip frappe?”

The girl stared blankly at Paige. “A what?”

She obviously doesn’t know what a frappe is. Let’s try something else. “How about an iced blended Grasshopper mocha?”

The girl’s eyes grew wider than the cinnamon rolls in the pastry window. “You want grasshoppers in your coffee?”

Paige racked her fingers through her hair. Forget hick town, what planet had she landed on? “May I have a hot coffee with French vanilla creamer?”

The young barista smiled. “Sure. Regular or decaf? I’m more of a decaf girl. Mom says I’m already too hyper to drink regular.”

I agree. “Regular, please.”

The girl turned to fill a cup with hot coffee from a silver urn. “I haven’t seen you before. You must be new.”

“Yeah, I just rode in yesterday.”

“Rode? Like on a horse?”

Is this kid for real? Paige shook her head. “The bus.”

“Here’s your drink. Can I get you anything else?”

The pastries in the glass case drew her eyes. Her stomach grumbled. The exercise had already burnt off her early breakfast. “Those orange scones look amazing.”

“They’re so delicious. Miss Jenn bakes everything from scratch. She’s my boss. And the owner. She’s not here today, though.”

“Thanks. I’ll try one.”

“That’ll be five seventy-five.” Kylie put one of the scones in a brown paper sack and set it on the counter. Paige handed the barista her debit card. She swiped it and handed it back with a pen and the receipt for Paige to sign. “Welcome to Whitman, Paige. I’m Kylie Phillips.”

The name was familiar. “Phillips? Like the Mayor?” The town of Whitman was inundated with political signs that read, Mayor Phillips for Governor. A Vote for Phillips is a Vote for Family. Paige scribbled her name across the bottom of the slip of paper and handed it and the pen back to the barista.

“That’s my mom.”

First Line Fridays: The White City

Welcome to First Line Friday’s hosted by Hoarding Books.

Today I am excited to be featuring The White City (True Colors) by Grace Hitchcock. My imagination was ignited right from chapter one. Drawn in with the colorful word imagery and witty dialogue and held captive by the vivacious characters. This is one book that you will want to read! CLICK HERE to read my full review!

TheWhiteCity (TrueColors)

Chicago, July 1893

Winnifred Wylde concentrated on his forehead, nodding, trying to respond appropriately, but it was so difficult with his nose hair escaping and retreating into his left nostril with every breath.

Yuck! The first line makes my stomach turn! Ladies, this is not the kind of suitor you’d want your spinster aunt trying to set you up with now, is it?

Is the active nose hair his only flaw? Will Winnifred find an escape? Or will she be forced to endure further outings with this latest suitor?

The White City (True Colors) by Grace Hitchcock

Mysterious Disappearances Taint the Chicago World’s Fair
Step into True Colors — a new series of Historical Stories of Romance and American Crime

Synopsis:

While attending the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, Winnifred Wylde believes she witnessed a woman being kidnapped. She tries to convince her father, an inspector with the Chicago police, to look into reports of mysterious disappearances around the White City. Inspector Wylde tries to dismiss her claims as exaggeration of an overactive imagination, but he eventually concedes to letting her go undercover as secretary to the man in question—if she takes her pistol for protection and Jude Thorpe, a policeman, for bodyguard.

Will she be able to expose H. H. Holmes’s illicit activity, or will Winnifred become his next victim?

My Thoughts:

My imagination was ignited right from chapter one. Drawn in with the colorful word imagery and witty dialogue and held captive by the vivacious characters, this is one book that you will want to read!

Winnifred loves to read the popular dime novels, yet sometimes her imagination gets ahead of her. She is nearly certain that she witness’s an abduction. However, her father, Inspector Wylde is reluctant to send out detectives on another one of her wild goose chases. Tasked with following her and keeping her safe, detective Jude Thorp becomes her personal bodyguard.

Jude Thorp harbors his own secrets and shadowing a pampered socialite isn’t what he had in mind when he moved to Chicago. However, he quickly finds out that Winnifred isn’t your typical socialite. She carries a pistol in her muff and she knows how to use it! Jude Thorp’s care and protection of Winnifred is one of my favorite things about this story! The slow-growing affection and Jude’s desire to have Winnifred’s father’s approval is quite endearing.

While Winnifred is trying to uncover the dastardly deeds of the notorious H. H. Holmes a tender, swoon-worthy romance is growing! There are many fun layers to this story, mysteries to solve along the way, and danger lurking in the most unlikely of shadows! I highly recommend this romantic, page-turning story to anyone who enjoys a delightful adventure with their romance!

The Curse of Misty Wayfair by Jaime Jo Wright

Synopsis:

Left at an orphanage as a child, Thea Reed vowed to find her mother someday. Now grown, her search takes her to Pleasant Valley, Wisconsin, in 1908. When clues lead her to a mental asylum, Thea uses her experience as a post-mortem photographer to gain access and assist groundskeeper Simeon Coyle in photographing the patients and uncovering the secrets within. However, she never expected her personal quest would reawaken the legend of Misty Wayfair, a murdered woman who allegedly haunts the area and whose appearance portends death.

A century later, Heidi Lane receives a troubling letter from her mother–who is battling dementia–compelling her to travel to Pleasant Valley for answers to her own questions of identity. When she catches sight of a ghostly woman who haunts the asylum ruins in the woods, the long-standing story of Misty Wayfair returns–and with it, Heidi’s fear for her own life.

As two women across time seek answers about their identities and heritage, can they overcome the threat of the mysterious curse that has them inextricably intertwined?

My Thoughts:

Suspenseful with a Gothic flair, this story is sure to draw you in and keep you glued to the pages, to find out what happens next! While the title is a little spooky and the cover may give you pause, I knew that I could trust Jaime Jo Wright to pin a story that is both spine-tingling in its suspense, and God fearing at its core.

The story is character driven, and oh, what fantastic characters await in the pages of this dual-timeline story! With threads of faith and redemption everything comes together to form a beautiful tapestry, A beautiful reminder that our identity is in our Creator God.

Things are not as they seem. Often, as in real life you have to peel back the layers to discover the truth, so it is with this story!

(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I am not required to write a positive review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.)

TheReckoningAtGossamerPondFor over a century, the town of Gossamer Grove has thrived on its charm and Midwestern values, but Annalise Forsythe knows painful secrets, including her own, hover just beneath the pleasant facade. When a man is found dead in his run-down trailer home, Annalise inherits the trailer, along with the pictures, vintage obituaries, and old revival posters covering its walls. As she sorts through the collection, she’s wholly unprepared for the ramifications of the dark and deadly secrets she’ll uncover.

A century earlier, Gossamer Grove has been stirred into chaos by the arrival of controversial and charismatic twin revivalists. The chaos takes a murderous turn when Libby Sheffield, working at her father’s newspaper, receives an obituary for a reputable church deacon hours before his death. As she works with the deacon’s son to unravel the mystery behind the crime, it becomes undeniably clear that a reckoning has come to town–but it isn’t until another obituary arrives that they realize the true depths of the danger they’ve waded into.

Two women, separated by a hundred years, must uncover the secrets within the borders of their own town before it’s too late and they lose their future–or their very souls.

The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond

Welcome Jaime! I’m super excited to have you visiting with us today! Let’s get started with a few fun questions and then chat about the book.

cornucopia-1789664_640Q:  What is your favorite season, and why?

Jaime:  I love Autumn! Everything about it. The cold, the dewy leaves, the crisp air, sweaters, fluffy blankets, coffee, oh man … now I’m getting excited all over again!

Trisha:  Autumn is a wonderful season. I especially love all the beautiful colors!

lantern-2369904_640Q:  What is the best part of your day?

Jaime:  It sounds weird, but that part of the evening when kids are in bed and it’s just me and my husband and we can catch up. This is not to say that I don’t thoroughly anticipate being with my kids! ❤ lol

Trisha:  I totally understand! It is nice when you can just relax and not have to worry about children for a moment.

love-2614754_640Q:  What are some of your favorite CF reads from 10 years ago, or further?

Jaime: Oh I love this question!!! I’m a huge fan of Tracie Peterson’s “Heir of Montana” series. Both because I love Montana, but I also fell in love with the stories. So good!!

Trisha:  That is a great series! I’ve enjoyed many of Tracie Peterson’s books!

mobile-616012_640QIf we took a peek at your “recently played” music, who would we find?

Jaime:  Hmmmm…a lot of Rend Collective, Ed Sheeran, and We Are Messengers.

Trisha:  Sounds like a nice selection!

book-863418_640Q:  Did the plotline or the characters come first?

Jaime:  Usually the characters. Sometimes a plot concept will come first. In my current work-in-progress it was definitely the characters.

blur-1869579_640QWhich character took you by surprise?

Jaime: In The Reckoning at Gossamer Pond, the character named Jacobus took me by complete surprise. He was 100% unplanned and came out of left field. But that also sort of fits his personality too. 😉

Trisha:  Yes, Jacobus took me by surprise also!

baby-1266117_640QWhat was the latest you stayed up working on this story?

Jaime:  On this one? LOL Don’t judge. I think it was 9:30 pm. LOLOL I can’t sacrifice for anything. I’m miserable without at least 8-9 hours due to my health, so if I don’t get that then writing becomes virtually impossible.

Trisha:  Getting enough sleep sure makes the next day better! I try to go to bed before 11 p.m., but I’m not always successful.

correcting-1870721_640Q:  What is something that didn’t make it into the final copy?

Jaime:  Oddly? Everything made it in. I mean, sentences here and there, but there were no deleted scenes in this novel.  I’m still sort of shocked by that. That’s rare.

Q:  What are you currently working on and how long till we can read more?! (I’m eager to read more amazing stories can you tell?)

Jaime:  “The Curse of Misty Wayfair” is due out in January 2019! I’m super excited about it. It was probably one of my favorites to write but also the most difficult. It delves into some areas that are personally sensitive to me and so it was an emotional write too.

Trisha:  Thank you, Jaime for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us today! It is always a pleasure to chat with you!

Don’t miss out on any of Jaime Jo Wright’s books!

Two women, separated by a hundred years, must uncover the secrets within the borders of their own town before it’s too late and they lose their future–or their very souls.

My Thoughts:

This story exceeded my expectations. The depth of the characters, the exceptional descriptions of location and word imagery that go beyond your typical fiction novel. The very atmosphere of the story is vivid and realistic. I didn’t just read this story, I lived the story! I walked the streets of Gossamer Grove, I took a seat on a stale staw bale of hay that stuck the back of my legs. I felt hurt and sadness at the painful secret that Annalise has had to live with. I turned on lights and nearly reached for my pepper spray at one point. I found myself looking over my shoulder and gasping in shock as the truth was revealed.

Jaime Jo Write has expertly woven together two time periods, each filled with dynamic characters and circumstances.  The author doesn’t shy away from the difficult topics. Within the pages, you’ll be challenged to take a hard look at sin, judgment, forgiveness and extending grace. I didn’t want to put this book down for a moment, I was captivated!

I’m typically not a huge fan of suspense, I’ll occasionally pick up one to read. However, I’m coming to the conclusion that if it’s by this author, I’ll want to pick it up every time! Trust me when I say that you won’t want to pass up the opportunity to read this outstanding new book! I give it 5++ stars and encourage you to snag a copy for yourself!
