A Beautiful Love

“Welcome back to Mayberry Park, Mr. Blake.”

A footman held the coach door open in anticipation. Though Preston’s mind told him to move, some invisible force glued him to his seat. He was not ready to be back at the Avery’s estate. A year was too soon after all that had plagued him.

Okay, so you caught me. I couldn’t just stop at the first line! I just had to include a little extra to give you a little taste. Why does Preston not want to be at the Avery estate? What has happened in the last year? Hmmm…. guess you’ll have to pick-up a copy and find out!

A Beautiful Love (Forever After #4) by Megan Walker

About this book:

Preston Blake had it all—wealth, a picturesque estate, and a growing affection with his childhood best friend Caroline Avery—until an unfortunate accident leaves him badly scarred in more ways than one. Isolated by the cruel eyes of society, Preston’s only wish is to find where he now belongs.

Caroline Avery is recently out in society, and thanks to Preston Blake’s broken promises, finds herself being chased by a determined earl instead of courted by her best friend. When, after a year’s absence, Preston finally accepts an invitation to visit her family’s estate, Caroline is determined to feign indifference to his company.

But being back together proves more challenging than either friend conceived. Caroline longs to return to the past, but Preston cannot let go of his fears. How could they possibly have a future together?

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading this sweet short story with a fairy-tale twist on the Hans Christian Anderson classic story of The Ugly Duckling. These wounded, yet charming characters warmed my heart. This is the first story in this Forever After collection that I have had the pleasure to read. I believe the stories each stand on their own and are joined with the theme of fairy-tales. I do hope to read the other stories as well.

We each mask pain in various ways. Often by pushing away the very ones that love us the most. The enemy takes the opportunity to whisper his lies, and before we know it feelings of unworthiness, and depression creep into our very souls. We lose our focus and our identity when we take our eyes off our loving Creator.

There were moments that I laughed out loud with the characters, gasped in surprise and smiled while happy tears pooled in my eyes. If you are looking for a sweet regency romance to enjoy, I highly recommend this story. I look forward to reading more from Megan Walker in the future!

Wedding Score by Amanda Tero

Synopsis:

Most girls dream of their wedding days. Except me. I’m too busy practicing piano to be the live soundtrack for everyone else’s weddings to think about my own. I’ve survived most of my twenties with harmonious chords and pleasant days. So why is it that now, at twenty-seven, a discordant feeling presents itself? Is there a solid solution to loneliness when there is absolutely no potential husband on the horizon?

Wedding Score

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading this short story from Author, Amanda Tero. While the story is short, it has depth. The heroine, a young lady in her late-twenties, happy with the direction her life has taken thus far, is suddenly hit with the realization that her friends are all either married or about to get married. All while she still sits on the relationship sidelines. Her struggle is real and honest, one that I think many young women face at some point in their lives. Let’s face it, society still holds to the old values of pressuring women into getting married and having babies.

What I appreciated about this story, is that the heroine turns to God. She turns to her faith. She spends time reading the Bible and praying. She is honest with her feelings and her struggle. I believe that this story would help many young women. It would give them an honest point of reference, and provide a strong foundation in faith, without being overbearing.

I would recommend this book to any young woman who needs encouragement in her singleness. A helpful reminder that God has a plan for her life, and that she can be happy and content in the season of life she is currently in.

She has enjoyed writing since before ten years old, but it has only been since 2013 that she began seriously pursuing writing again – starting with some short stories that she wrote for her sisters as a gift. Her mom encouraged her to try selling the stories she published, and since then, she has begun actively writing short stories, novellas, and novels.

If something she has written draws an individual into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, it is worth it!

A Stranger on My Land by Sandra Merville Hart

Synopsis:

Carrie and her little brother, Jay, find a wounded soldier on their land after a battle which later became known as “The Battle Above the Clouds.” Adam, a Union soldier, has been shot twice in the arm. Though Carrie is reluctant to take Adam to their cave where her family hides their livestock from both armies, she cannot turn her back on him.

But her Aunt Lavinia, bitter over what Yankees have done to their land, urges Carrie to allow Adam to die. Carrie refuses, but cannot remove the bullets. Adam’s friendship with Jay softens her heart toward him. It’s not long until his gratitude and teasing manner spark a friendship between the young couple. Even though Carrie’s father fights for the Confederacy in far-off Virginia, her feelings for the handsome young soldier begin to blossom into love.

When Adam’s condition worsens, Carrie knows a Union surgeon is needed to save his life. How can she accomplish this and keep her family’s hiding place a secret?

My Thoughts:

This short story leaps off the page with vivid characters and an imaginative setting. I often imagined what it would be like to sleep overnight in a cave. This story finds a family living in a cave to hide from Union and Confederate soldier’s alike. The historical details and research really helped bring the story to life.

I enjoyed reading this short story. The characters are realistic, the setting imaginative. While I did wish the story had been a bit longer, as it felt a bit rushed at the end to wrap things up. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

I give this story 3.5-stars. If you enjoy reading Civil War period stories, I’m sure you would enjoy reading this fun short story that is sure to spark your imagination.

(I purchased a copy of this story. I was not required to write a positive review.)
