Teach Me to Love (Brothers of Belle Forche #1) by Kari Trumbo

Synopsis:

Izzy Lawson has taken her last abuse.
When her husband dies, she has a choice in make: go home and face the family who made her stay with the beast, or head to Belle Fourche to the only friend she has left. The reserve she’s worked so hard to build crumbles in the verdant rolling hills, and in the arms of a man so different from her husband.

Conrad Oleson can’t read, and it’s shamed him for longer than he can remember.
When another teacher shows up on his front step, he’s sure his brother is meddling again. But when Izzy reveals her painful past, he can’t stay away. And if learning to read brings him closer to her, he’ll do about anything for her. Including, teaching her how to love.

My Thoughts:

I was drawn into this story from the beginning. These characters are realistic and vulnerable, they will capture your heart and your imagination!

The choices we make don’t always turn out the way we expected, and life certainly didn’t turn out as Izzy Lawson expected. But now she has the opportunity to go a new direction, and while the idea is a little terrifying, she is ready for the challenge.

Secrets have a way of either holding us away from other people, and Conrad’s secret of not being able to read isn’t any different. He always wanted to read, but the letters just got jumbled, and helping out on the farm was more important.

This is the first story I’ve read from Kari Trumbo, and I absolutely loved it! Currently, this story is part of the Timeless Love Collection. You can purchase the entire Collection for only .99c but hurry it’s only available for a limited time and in a few weeks, it will be available as a stand-alone.

(I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including Netgalley. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own.)

Excerpt:

“You a teacher, then?” He ground out the words. How he disliked teachers, but this one seemed pretty harmless.

She hesitated. Her voice so quiet he had to strain to hear. “No, sir.”

“But, didn’t you say you were from the Normal School?” Why couldn’t the woman just answer and be done with it?

“I was, but I didn’t finish. I was married instead.”

He held his breath for a moment and waited until she looked back up at him. “If you’re married, where’s your husband?”

Her soft blue eyes turned hard, and cold, the little golden flecks at their center like fire from within. “I hope he’s in hell,” she whispered, her shoulders shuddered as she looked away.

The heat of shame crept up her neck and he got the distinct feeling that she was unused to speaking her mind. Which was so very different from every teacher he’d ever known. She didn’t say more.

“The house is just up yonder. Lula and Barton live on their own place, but he leaves her at the house every day, so that’s where she’ll be.”

“Thank you, sir. You’ve been most kind.”

No, he hadn’t. He wasn’t fool enough to believe such nonsense and he had to clench his teeth from correcting her. While her dander had been up when he’d mentioned her Mr., she was generally fairly placid, and something about that bothered him. A woman wasn’t supposed to be. She was supposed to smile and bring warmth, noise, bring a man to smile even if he didn’t want to. This woman seemed to have forgotten how and deep inside, he couldn’t shake the question, why.

“I’ll take your horse to the barn and bring your saddle bag back up later.” He pulled to a stop and dismounted, flipping the rein over the saddle horn. Talon wouldn’t move anyway. He stepped around Mrs. Lawson’s horse, just as Mrs. Lawson raised up to dismount. She’d been riding astride and he’d just noticed her booted feet sticking out from her skirts as her eyes rolled back in her head and her body went limp. He groped for her waist and tugged her down towards him, so she didn’t fall under the horse’s hooves. Fool woman. Felt like she weighed less than a sack of oats. Why did women have to be so tiny? They never seemed to tire of telling men to eat, couldn’t they take a minute to listen to their own advice?
