Kari Trumbo is one of four authors in the best-selling Cutter’s Creek series. She writes Christian Historical Romance and is a stay-at-home mom to four vibrant children. When she isn’t writing, or editing, she home schools her children and pretends to keep up with them. Kari loves reading, listening to contemporary Christian music, singing when no one’s listening, and curling up near the wood stove when winter hits. She makes her home in central Minnesota with her husband of almost twenty years, two daughters, two sons, three cats, and one hungry wood stove.

“You a teacher, then?” He ground out the words. How he disliked teachers, but this one seemed pretty harmless.
She hesitated. Her voice so quiet he had to strain to hear. “No, sir.”
“But, didn’t you say you were from the Normal School?” Why couldn’t the woman just answer and be done with it?
“I was, but I didn’t finish. I was married instead.”
He held his breath for a moment and waited until she looked back up at him. “If you’re married, where’s your husband?”
Her soft blue eyes turned hard, and cold, the little golden flecks at their center like fire from within. “I hope he’s in hell,” she whispered, her shoulders shuddered as she looked away.
The heat of shame crept up her neck and he got the distinct feeling that she was unused to speaking her mind. Which was so very different from every teacher he’d ever known. She didn’t say more.
“The house is just up yonder. Lula and Barton live on their own place, but he leaves her at the house every day, so that’s where she’ll be.”
“Thank you, sir. You’ve been most kind.”
No, he hadn’t. He wasn’t fool enough to believe such nonsense and he had to clench his teeth from correcting her. While her dander had been up when he’d mentioned her Mr., she was generally fairly placid, and something about that bothered him. A woman wasn’t supposed to be. She was supposed to smile and bring warmth, noise, bring a man to smile even if he didn’t want to. This woman seemed to have forgotten how and deep inside, he couldn’t shake the question, why.
“I’ll take your horse to the barn and bring your saddle bag back up later.” He pulled to a stop and dismounted, flipping the rein over the saddle horn. Talon wouldn’t move anyway. He stepped around Mrs. Lawson’s horse, just as Mrs. Lawson raised up to dismount. She’d been riding astride and he’d just noticed her booted feet sticking out from her skirts as her eyes rolled back in her head and her body went limp. He groped for her waist and tugged her down towards him, so she didn’t fall under the horse’s hooves. Fool woman. Felt like she weighed less than a sack of oats. Why did women have to be so tiny? They never seemed to tire of telling men to eat, couldn’t they take a minute to listen to their own advice?
