Besotted (The Fairest Maidens #3) by Jody Hedlund

About the Book:

In a land where being the fairest maiden is a curse . . .

A young queen trying to stay alive until she comes of age to rule, and a prince turned into a pauper.

Queen Aurora of Mercia has spent her entire life deep in Inglewood Forest, hiding from Warwick’s Queen Margery, who seeks her demise. As the time draws near for Aurora to take the throne, she happens upon a handsome woodcutter. Although friendship with outsiders is forbidden and dangerous, she cannot stay away from the charming stranger.

Only two months away from completing his royal testing, Prince Kresten of Scania is ready to be finished with the poverty and hardships of being a woodcutter. When he meets a beautiful peasant woman, he doesn’t plan to fall in love, especially when he must soon leave and return to his homeland.

As Queen Margery’s forces close in, Aurora finds herself in mortal danger. Kresten knows a future with Aurora is impossible, but he is desperate to save her and bring an end to the queen’s threat. To do so, he joins the ultimate battle against the evil queen, risking everything, including his chance at true love.

The real Sleeping Beauty story.

My Thoughts:

A most satisfying conclusion to The Fairest Maidens collection. A page-turning adventure awaits within the pages of this delightful twist on the old classic of Sleeping Beauty. Unexpected and exciting. While this collection is listed as Young Adult, readers of all ages will be blissfully enchanted by this wonderful collection.

I always enjoy escaping into Jody Hedlund’s stories, and this latest story was the perfect escape! The plot is exciting and the characters are dynamic and show growth throughout the story. Even though I didn’t want the story to come to an end, everything was resolved, and I felt quite satisfied with the conclusion.

I enjoyed the banter between the characters and watching their relationship grow and mature, both with each other and with other characters as well. As always, a Hedlund story is not to be missed. I highly recommend this book and the entire collection to anyone who is looking for a book to lose themselves in.

Beguiled (The Fairest Maidens #2) by Jody Hedlund

About the Book:

In a land where being the fairest maiden is a curse . . .

A princess rejected and hunted by her mother, and a prince who lives as a shunned outcast.

Princess Pearl flees for her life after her mother, Queen Margery, tries to have her killed during a hunting expedition. Pearl finds refuge on the Isle of Outcasts among criminals and misfits, disguising her face with a veil so no one recognizes her. She lives for the day when she can return to Warwick and rescue her sister, Ruby, from the queen’s clutches.

Amidst his royal testing on the Isle of Outcasts, Prince Mikkel of Scania has kept his identity a secret. Captured by a warring band of outcasts and condemned to die, he finds himself making friends with an intriguing but feisty young veiled woman. Intending to win her trust and gain her help to escape, he soon finds himself coerced to wed her.

Mikkel reluctantly agrees to the union to save his life, and Pearl hopes the marriage will provide protection for her and Ruby. But the queen is more determined to kill her daughter than either Pearl or Mikkel realizes and has a sinister reason neither expects—one that could rip their new love apart forever.

My Thoughts:

Such an exciting, page-turning adventure. I fairly inhaled this book. I didn’t mean to, but I read this book in a day. I couldn’t put it down! With vivid engaging characters and a story line that pulls you in and won’t let go, you won’t want to pass up the opportunity to dive into this story!

Lessons of letting go of bitterness, looking at the character of people and not the outside, and that love isn’t just a feeling, but a choice. The characters grow and learn from each other throughout the story. I enjoyed the adventure, the drama, and the suspense it all blends together seamlessly.

Jody Hedlund’s books are always an instant buy for me. I don’t just read the story once and move on, I often come back and enjoy the story again! This newest series is a pure delight and I simply can not wait until the next story comes out!

Pembroke Castle, Western Midlands
September, in the year of our Lord 1395

“Upon our arrival,” Lady Margaret said, flicking her reins and prodding her mare to a trot, “Sir Thomas will be expecting your agreement of marriage.”
“So soon?” I urged my horse to keep up with my stepmother’s, though I wished to slow down. We were all too quickly approaching our journey’s destination, Pembroke Castle, which jutted out of the foggy mist ahead, its tall stone towers like apparitions arising from a graveyard.

I shared more than just the first line this week because I really wanted to give you a better sense of the setting and what was happening. This still leaves a lot of questions.

Why is her stepmother forcing this marriage?  It seems that our heroine isn’t so sure about getting married to Sir Thomas.

The castle sure appears to be quite gloomy. With an image of a graveyard, One can only guess that this isn’t your fairy castle of dreams!

Will our heroine agree to this marriage? Is Sir Thomas as creepy as his castle appears? You will just have to pick up a copy of this book to find out!

A Worthy Rebel by Jody Hedlund

A desperate noblewoman, a rebellious peasant, and a forbidden love.

Synopsis:

While fleeing an arranged betrothal to a heartless lord, Lady Isabelle becomes injured and lost. Rescued by a young peasant man, she hides her identity as a noblewoman for fear of reprisal from the peasants who are bitter and angry toward the nobility.

Cole Warwick cannot turn his back on a person in need and soon finds himself falling for Izzy, the gentle and beautiful runaway who is mending in his cottage. As the leader of an imminent uprising against the nobility, he tries to resist his growing feelings for Izzy to protect her from the dangerous life he’s chosen. But the longer she stays, the more he hopes she’ll never leave.

When Izzy’s true identity is revealed, Cole feels betrayed. With the rebellion underway, can Cole forgive Izzy and find a way to save her from an unhappy marriage? Or will he and his peasant army be destroyed before he has the chance to fight for the people and the woman he loves?

My Thoughts:

I was swept away into the intrigue and adventure right from the beginning of this delightful story! Jody Hedlund has a way with words that seems to captivate my imagination and keep me eagerly turning pages late into the night.

Lady Isabelle starts out as a young lady who is fearful and sheltered. I enjoyed watching her grow into a strong character as she not only learns to trust those she once feared, but she also learns to see her own worth and her ability to make a difference in the lives of those around her.

Cole Warwick has a gentle heart for those he sees in need, yet at the same time, he carries around a heavy burden of anger toward the unjust treatment from the nobility. Cole often brushes aside the advice of not only his mother but of his best friend. However, their words do stick with him and he comes to understand that letting go of the past is the only way he will be able to move forward and enjoy his future.

Will two people from polar opposite ends of the class spectrum find a way to be together? Or will their differences be too big of a wall to tear down?

While this book is the 5th in the series, you could read it as a stand-alone. A few characters show up from previous books, but not in such a way that you would feel lost. With that said, however, I would encourage you to read the other books, as they are just as delightful as this one.

I give this story 4.5 stars and would encourage you to snag a copy of this book for yourself and a friend to enjoy!

(I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including Netgalley. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own.)

Review & Giveaway: A Loyal Heart by Jody Hedlund on tour with Celebrate Lit

He’s taken her as his prisoner. But she’s holding his heart captive. In gaining their freedom, will they lose what matters most?

Synopsis:

When Lady Olivia’s castle is besieged, she and her sister are taken captive and held for ransom by her father’s enemy, Lord Pitt. Loyalty to family means everything to Olivia. She’ll save her sister at any cost and do whatever her father asks—even if that means obeying his order to steal a sacred relic from her captor.

As Lord Pitt’s commander, Sir Aldric is in charge of the beautiful but feisty new prisoner. He has his hands full attempting to keep Lady Olivia out of trouble. When Lord Pitt throws her in the dungeon and threatens to hang her for stealing, Aldric conceives a plot to save Olivia’s life—betrothal to him.

Can Olivia give up the prestigious match her father has arranged with a wealthy marquess in order to marry a lowly knight like Aldric? And can Aldric move beyond his past mistakes to embrace love again? When loyalties are tested, they’re thrust into danger that could cost them their love and their lives.

My Thoughts:

Travel back through the mist of time. Walk the chilly stone halls of medieval castles, hear the clang of swords as the knights hone their skills, and smell…ok, well don’t breath too deeply! Picking up a Jody Hedlund book is akin to holding a treasure trove of history in your hands. Sit back, and enjoy the travel through time from the comfort of your favorite reading chair.

Olivia isn’t your typical lady of the castle. She is no shrinking violet. Fiercely loyal, Olivia is an independent, sword-wielding heroine, ready to take on anything, or anyone that stands in her way.

Aldric, tasked with the quest to capture Olivia and bring her to Lord Pit. Didn’t realize what he was getting into. Secretly impressed with her creative attempts to escape her capture, he feels a responsibility to keep her safe, even from herself.

Written in alternating point of view, readers are invited directly into the personal thoughts and feelings of the characters. While written for a young adult audience, readers of all ages will fall in love with these characters and their story.

I loved everything about this exciting story, and highly recommend it to anyone to enjoys reading stories of castles, knights & ladies. You won’t want to miss out on this story!

Guest Post from Jody Hedlund

The Growing Need for Sweet Young Adult Romances

By Jody Hedlund

This past year my youngest daughter turned twelve and entered seventh grade. And she decided that she wanted to read my books.

Of course I was thrilled that she was taking an interest in my writing. But since my adult historical romances are more intense and contain some mature themes, I handed her the young adult series I’ve written.

As she started the first book, I peeked in her room a time or two to ask her how she liked it.

“It’s the best book you’ve ever read, right?” I teased.

“It’s okay,” she replied, teasing me right back.

The true test for how much she liked the series came when she couldn’t put the book down. She hid away in her room and read all day. Then she read the second book the next day and the third book the day after that.

She never did gush over the series. But she didn’t need to. Her serious reading marathon told me all I needed to know! Then when I was writing the fourth book in the series, she asked me if she could read itearly before it was published which was another testament to how much she enjoyed the series.

“As long as you promise to say that I’m your favorite author,” I said, teasing her again.

I’m happy to say that she finished A Loyal Heart just as quickly as the others. Although I’m not sure that I’m her favorite author, I’m satisfied that she loved the series.

Even more, I’m thrilled that I could hand her sweet romances full of chivalrous qualities—like courage, sacrifice, honor, and loyalty. As she’s being entertained, she’s learning lessons about character traits that are important in relationships.

My daughter, like other young teens I’ve talked to, really enjoys medieval settings and stories. In some ways, those kinds of stories connect them to the princess fairy tales they used to love when they were little. Let’s face it, even adult readers still love stories about knights and castles and daring damsels!

In a book market for teens that has grown increasingly dark, jaded, and sexual, I only wish I had more to offer my daughter and other young women. It’s my passion to continue providing wholesome, clean romances for teens, books I know will encourage and uplift as well as entertain.

How about YOU? Is there a teen reader you know who needs an alternative to what’s available in the market? I encourage you to gift them with A Loyal Heart. And make sure to enter the giveaway for a chance to win the entire series that you can read, pass along, or even gift to your library.

Jody Hedlund is the best-selling author of over twenty historicals for both adults and teens and is the winner of numerous awards including the Christy, Carol, and Christian Book Award. She lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. Ludlow Castle, Eastern Marches
June, in the year of our Lord 1392

“The inner bailey wall to the south is down, my lady, and the castle will soon be overrun.” The soldier faltered in the doorway of my chambers, his armor slick with the blood of battle.

Will she make it out of the castle in time, or become a captive?
